Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership

Corporate Departure
The economist stated he would withdraw from public roles after House committee made public his repeated correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is departing from the board at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.

The economist remarked in a release that he was "thankful for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and anticipate observing their progress".

Summers, who formerly led Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The recently released communications revealed that the official communicated with the financier until the day before the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the technology organization said it understood Summers' decision to step down.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the Board," the company commented.

Political Context

This development comes after the two houses of the legislative branch voted on this week to approve a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to make public its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will subsequently move to the office of the White House for approval. Trump has said he intends to approve the measure, after changing his position on the matter following pressure from his supporters.

Email Contents

A group of financier-linked messages released by the legislative panel days ago mentioned multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The messages showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to connect the academic to notable international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were released with the wider community, Summers said he assumed "total ownership for my poor judgment to maintain corresponding with the financier".

He added that he hoped "to reestablish faith and mend bonds with the people nearest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He presided over the institution from five years and remains a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public commitments recently on Monday, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where Summers was a researcher, verified that Summers was not affiliated with the institution.

Summers entered the directorate of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to replace its CEO Sam Altman.
